Dr. Kristin Neff:
The three components of self-compassion:
Self-Kindness versus Self-Judgment
• “Treating ourselves with kindness, care, understanding, and support, just as we would treat a good friend. Most people treat themselves more harshly, saying cruel things to themselves that they would never say to others.”
Common Humanity versus Isolation
• “Seeing our imperfections as part of the larger human experience. Also recognizing that everyone suffers.”
Mindfulness versus Over-Identification
• “Knowing that we are suffering, while we suffer. This is a prerequisite for compassion to arise. Mindfulness allows us to turn toward painful feelings and ‘be with’ them as they are.”
