After graduating from Vanderbilt with a psychology degree, I viewed medical school and my entire medical career through a mind-body lens. My personal practice of meditation, relaxation and yoga informed my patient care during medical training and many years in rural primary care. The humanitarian example of Albert Schweitzer inspired my choice of medicine as a career and still does. Less medicine is the best medicine. Meditation is medicine. Mindfulness is medicine. Yoga is medicine. My life and work are devoted to the study, practice and teaching of mindfulness-based, mind-body skills to promote resilience, manage stress, prevent burnout and cultivate joy, meaning and compassion. Groups I serve include persons with chronic conditions, health professionals, university staff and faculty, businesses, teachers, non-profits, clergy and teens.
